Sore After Running Or Cycling?

Feeling sore after vigorous exercise such as running or cycling is going to happen sometimes. Of course, the better shape an individual is in to begin with, the less soreness and stiffness he or she will experience. However, all runners, from the street jogger to the world-class professional will come up against physical problems. Soreness in the hip area is a common complaint after a running or cycling session.

This could mean something more serious is causing the problem, though a sore hip may just mean that muscles and joints have been overworked. Athletes at all levels have to seek treatment now and then to relieve pain and to uncover any hidden problems that may be causing soreness. Over the years, a number of experienced runners, trainers and doctors have discovered some ways to deal with the inevitable running or cycling physical problems.

Treatments

Though it sounds like a cliché, a sore hip often responds well to the application of an ice pack. The coolness of the ice soothes sore muscles, which heat up due to irritation and increased blood flow. Application of ice also helps keep the area from swelling or to keep the swelling to a minimum. Application of a heating pad or artificial heat may relieve pain but won’t do much about the tenderness of the muscles in the hip area.

Keeping the body hydrated by drinking the right amount of water will also help with soreness and stiffness. The human body is primarily made up of water and the muscles (as well as other parts of the body) must have sufficient water content to work properly. This is especially true of muscles that are sore and overtaxed.

Several companies make products for just such situations. Elite Ozone Body Care products, for example, are available for a variety of running/cycling situations. Warming oil helps stimulate blood flow and get needed oxygen to muscles. Elite Ozone Refresh Oil is good after activity during hotter times of the year. Many runners and cyclists use this product for self-massage after competition.

Both running and cycling are great sports, suitable for the amateur and professional. Those athletes that stay in top shape may be able to avoid all but the most minor, nagging problems. However, runners and riders will eventually get sore, have some aches and will need treatment or special attention from a trainer or sports medicine professional. Prevention is key, especially stretching the muscles of the body before competition. This alone may be the difference between being able to compete and not being able to answer the bell.

Nurse Shortages Continue to Plague the Health Care Industry

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Nurses are in more demand than ever. That’s good news as far as nurses and those still in the nursing programs are concerned. But not so for the hospitals and health care facilities scrambling to hire new qualified nurses of all specialties.

The weak links in the “nursing supply chain” start from a lack of enough nursing programs in colleges and extend all the way up to the high cost of living in some metropolitan areas.

Sometimes the legislators get the blame for not earmarking enough money to support the existing nursing programs and start new ones. And in some other instances, the realities of the job market divert nurses to far away places for better pay and more promising career challenges.

The nurse shortage is acute in Central Texas where an additional 5,000 nurses are needed by 2010, which is only three years away at the time of this writing.

The same is true of California. According to a 2006 study conducted by the California Hospitals Association, there are 622 nurses for every 100,000 Californians, in contrast to the average of 787 nurses per 100,000 Americans. California is ranked 49th out of 50 states by CHA in availability of nurses.

But parts of California fare even worse. In North County, for example, there are only 356 nurses per 100,000 residents.

The situation looks similar in parts of Canada. In a recent news story, the O’Leary Hospital in Prince Edwards Island was reported to “go from 16 beds down to five” for the rest of this summer “unless more nurses can be found.”

Paradoxically enough, sometimes improvements in the overall health care system can actually reduce the demand for nurses. The overall picture is a complex one.

Lorie Shoemaker, chief nursing officer at Palomar Pomerado Health, for example, is quoted for pointing out to a less demand for nurses with the “national shift from traditional health insurance policies to managed care plans focused on keeping people well.” When people feel better and get sick less often, hospitals close and nurses move out to places where they are needed more.

Horehound – A Medicine, Not a Dirty Word

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The herb commonly known as Horehound, marrubium vulgare, became one of the first herbs used in ancient times when there were signs of cold or sore throat. Horehound is a very bitter herb and was very repulsive to use as a tea which was the historical use of this herb.

The taste of Horehound made many decide to state “I’d rather take my chances with the cold than drink that stuff”. Well out of necessity comes innovation so here is the story of the popular and often used “horehound candy”.

Originally water was boiled and the leaves of Horehound were steeped in the hot water until it was a tea. As mentioned previously the medicinal tea was so bitter that hardly anyone would drink it.

In ancient times sugar was a spice and few could afford it so not an option to sweeten the tea, unless someone were lucky enough to have robbed a honey bee hive. Soon the Gentry realized one way to pacify the peasant masses was to make sugar an affordable spice so the masses would have a spice to flavor the often poor selection of foods available to them.

Horehound tea benefited from the abundance of sugar and before long the peasantry were taking the extremely bitter tea and cooking it down in a sugar mixture. It didn’t take long though before the best way to administer the herb horehound was to make a candy stick and let the patient suck on it. The effect of diminishing coughs was a great benefit and the addition of the sugar made it desirable.

Now when you go to the drugstore and see the “horehound cough drops” you will know the origin of tea to medicinal candy.
